About us
Who we are
We are the Greyhound Awareness League (GAL), and we’ve been rescuing and rehoming sighthounds for over 25 years. We are passionate about supporting and advocating for the needs of ex-working, ex-racing and abandoned lurchers, greyhounds, and sighthounds.
We are entirely volunteer run, so our enthusiastic team of hound-loving helpers balance everything from vet appointments and behavioural issues, to fundraising, shop orders, events, and accounting.
Like most animal rescue charities, GAL relies upon the generosity of the public to continue its work. GAL does not employ any staff. Therefore, every penny contributed to our charity is re-invested into our efforts to rescue and rehome greyhounds and lurchers throughout Scotland.
What we do
Dogs come to GAL from many backgrounds. Most of our greyhounds come straight from the racetrack and have been transferred to GAL from their owners and trainers to find loving homes to live out their retirement in.
We also work with dog wardens and other animal welfare organisations to help abandoned hounds and help find new homes if a family’s situation has changed and they’re no longer able to care for their hound, or, sadly, if an owner has passed away.
Once in GAL’s care we ensure that every dog is well cared for, starting with a full health check and assessment of their temperament.
GAL is unusual in that we place all our incoming dogs into loving foster homes, rather than kennels. This way, we can get to know each hound individually and match them carefully to their Forever Homes. We can also help them with the transition from racing to roaching, with our fosters teaching them about everything from washing machines to walkies. Our volunteer Janet often says fostering is like putting a toddler in university… and that’s just the humans!
All dogs that come into GAL’s care are vaccinated, neutered and microchipped before rehoming.

We’re always delighted to welcome new supporters to GAL.
From donations, to membership, there are many ways that you can make a financial contribution to our work. You can even help us earn donations by doing your online shopping via one of the cashback-style charity sites we’re affiliated with. Check out our donations page for more details.
As we’re entirely volunteer-run, we’re always looking for people to join our volunteer foster teams, and we’d love to have you join us at our events where you can meet some of our hounds and help us raise awareness for these amazing dogs.
If you think you can help us in our mission to make sure every pointy face gets a squashy bed of their very own, head over to our support hub to find out more and join our amazing community.
